Liposuction/Liposculpture

The distinction between high volume liposuction and liposculpture is an important one at The Carlotti Center. Liposuction is simply the taking away or removal of fatty tissue by the use of a liposuction cannula. Liposculpture on the other hand, targets specific areas with a higher level of precision and results.

Liposculpture is a method that targets and carefully removes specific areas of fat deposits, which cannot be “dieted away.” The areas are known as “fat depots” which are under hormonal control and are the last to go as patient approaches actually being underweight and the first to come back as they gain weight again. When you lose weight, fat cells shrink in size, not decrease in number. However, after liposculpture the number of fat cells is reduced permitting control of these hard to control areas. Drs. Carlotti use this liposuction procedure on patients who are near their desired weight level and who wish for the removal of specific fat deposits and not for weight loss.

Patients who are excellent candidates for Liposculpture in Scottsdale, are those, who in most cases, have a regular exercise routine, are on a weight loss diet and who are mostly concerned with particular “trouble areas” that diet and exercise don’t seem to effect.

Women’s common deposit areas:
• Hips
• Inner and outer thighs
• Buttocks

Men’s common deposit areas:
• Abdomen
• Flanks (hips)

(Neither Liposuction or Liposculpture help in the treatment of cellulite. In many patients the hormone estrogen causes this condition.)

Liposculpture, like so many other procedures at The Carlotti Center in Scottsdale, is an out-patient procedure. It is performed under an IV sedation anesthetic. The specific areas to be treated are also locally anesthetized with a tumescent anesthetic, and then a very narrow diameter (2-3 mm) liposuction cannula is inserted into the layers of tissue through small incisions to remove the fat. These tiny port incisions are concealed in very inconspicuous locations and eventually heal and disappear altogether.

Following the removal of the fatty tissue, the area must be compressed with a special surgical garment for 6-8 weeks. Bruising, swelling and mild discomfort are typical. As normal decreased sensation of the skin begins to resolve, it is normal to have itching and soreness that may last several weeks. This discomfort is easliy managed with medications. It is absolutely critical for a good result that the patient control their weight following surgery. Research has shown that as little as a 6 pound weight gain can alter the smoothness of the result and leave irregular areas. Touch up procedures may be necessary 3-6 months post-op if irregular healing occurs.
