What is a Liposuction?

As the name suggests, liposuction is a surgical cosmetic treatment that works to slim and reshape specific areas of the body by removing excess fat and improving the contours and proportions of your body. Other names for the procedure are lipoplasty and body contouring. Contrary to popular belief, liposuction shouldn’t be seen as a means to an end to losing weight. Some of the most effective ways of losing and sustaining a healthy weight are consuming a healthy diet and exercising. Moreover, you can combine liposuction with gastric bypass surgery if you want to lose weight.

It may be performed as a stand-alone treatment or in combination with other plastic surgery procedures, such as a facelift, breast reduction, or a tummy tuck. Liposuction is commonly used to remove fat in the following areas:

  • Thighs
  • Hips and buttocks
  • Abdomen and waist
  • Upper arms
  • Back
  • Inner knee
  • Chest area
  • Cheeks, chin and neck
  • Calves and ankles

Liposuction works by removing fat from your body using suction. Our plastic surgeon will make small incisions into your skin, and insert thin, blunt-tipped tubes. These tubes will target fat deposits and remove them from your body via suction.

There are several different methods of liposuction which may be used, ranging from traditional suction-assisted liposuction (SAL) to laser-assisted liposuction (LAL). When you visit our office, our plastic surgeon will discuss your goals and your body type with you to determine the best type of liposuction to help you achieve the look you desire. We will provide you with detailed post-op instructions for aftercare and recovery following your procedure.

How To Know if You’re a Good Candidate for Liposuction

Liposuction shouldn’t be considered as a way to get rid of your problems overnight. For example, you shouldn’t expect that it will get rid of cellulite immediately. As with other surgical procedures, it comes with its fair risks. As such, you should only consider having liposuction if you meet the following conditions:

  • Have healthy skin, which should ideally be firm and elastic.
  • Be a non-smoker
  • Be close to 30% of the weight you’re trying to achieve.

Doctors don’t recommend the procedure to people with chronic illnesses such as high blood pressure or diabetes.

What you Need to Know Before the Procedure

It would be best to consult with your doctor to understand what you should expect before and after the procedure. They’ll also run some tests to identify whether you’re a good candidate or not based on your overall health at the time. Additionally, you’ll learn how much it will cost and the associated health risks.

If you’re sure you want to proceed to the next steps, they’ll guide you on how to prepare for the surgery, including the diet you should stick to.

What happens on the day of the procedure?

When done by a professionally trained medical professional, you should be able to make a full recovery. It’s, however, crucial to ensure that the place where you have it is accredited.

  • In most cases, the doctor will allow you to go home to recover. If, on the other hand, you had a lot of fat to get rid of, you’re better off doing it in a medical facility where they have beds so you can spend a night or two.
  • It’s not uncommon for the doctor to mark the areas of the body where the liposuction will be done. They may also take photos.
  • Before the surgery, you’ll be given anesthesia. The doctor performing the surgery can decide to have you fully asleep or partly asleep. They may also ask your opinion on this.

Does it Take Long to Recover?

The time it takes to recover is dependent on, among other things, how invasive the procedure was and your general health. It’s not uncommon to experience bruising, swelling, and swelling, which can last for a few weeks. You can control the swelling by wearing a compression garment for a few months.

Additionally, antibiotics are common to prevent infections, which can increase the recovery process.

Are There any Risks?

As with other invasive procedures, liposuction has some risks, and as such, it should only be done by a professionally trained and certified medical professional. Some of them include:

  • Excessive loss of blood
  • Fluid accumulation
  • Infection
  • Numbness

If you’ve been considering or your doctor has recommended liposuction, we’re happy to report that it’s a fairly safe procedure. That being said, it comes with some risks and should only be conducted by a qualified medical professional in a certified institution. Our highly trained team at Club Image is ready to answer any questions you may have, so schedule a consultation today.
